Jenny/Jane/Jinny Clara b. 20th November 1886- January 1953.
Jane also was a music hall entertainer and allegedly a bit of a stunner. According to Maud she had an affair with George H. Elliott and got with child by him which was a bit of a scandal. Elliott was known as ‘The Chocolate coloured coon‘, I wasn’t aware of there being any other colours? Elliott made at least 2 phonograph recordings in 1912 and was performing at the Islington Empire in 1932. Searching the web he certainly seems to appear on a lot of postcards.

Peter says that Jinny was a very kind lady and always smiling . Her and Donald were inseparable apparently. After they moved to York road they went to live in a small bungalow opposite the ravens worth arms in Lamesley. Jinny ran a small shop from the front room. Olive and Peter used to look after the shop whilst Jinny took the sandwiches to the pub . Jinny used to return drunk and fall on Peter laughing and declaring her undying love for him. Peter also says she was a bit of a recluse but always a gentle affectionate woman.

Not sure I rate this one as dubious as its been mentioned by my dad Alan and Maureen and also why make something like that up? Also it seems an extremely obscure thing to say about someone totally unknown to us today (Elliott that is) but he would have been fairly well known at the time. Maureen says that Ginny was a bit of a recluse and had a stillborn child by a Belgian soldier or refugee (which ties us back to Elizabethville, Birtley again!). If we take both stories or even one of them as read then as an unmarried mother she would indeed be a recluse. This also confirms that they moved from Gateshead/Heworth to Birtley some time between 1901 and 1914.

George H. Elliott’s Wikipedia entry is Here. He appeared on This is Your Life in 1957. Shame Eamonn Andrews didn’t ask him about ‘Jinny’ …. “Now here’s a voice you haven’t heard for a long time….” “George? You Bastard!”
